How does the date converter work?
This converter translates any date between the Hijri (lunar) calendar and the Gregorian (solar) calendar, in either direction, using a dedicated date-conversion service, with a tabular Hijri calendar calculation in your browser as a fallback if the service is unreachable. No personal data is collected.
Pick the conversion direction from the tabs above: Gregorian to Hijri, or Hijri to Gregorian.
How accurate is the result?
The official Hijri calendar used in Saudi Arabia (the Umm al-Qura calendar) relies on actual moon sighting or precise astronomical calculations of the moon's position at the start of each month, while this converter uses a fixed arithmetic algorithm (a tabular Islamic calendar) that does not account for sighting variation from month to month.
A margin of one to two days The result here is an approximation and may differ by one or two days from the official calendar, especially near the start of a lunar month. For important official or religious occasions, always check the officially announced calendar in your country.
The difference between the two calendars
| Property | Hijri calendar | Gregorian calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | The moon's orbit around Earth | The Earth's orbit around the sun |
| Year length | About 354 days | 365 or 366 days (leap year) |
| Months | 12 lunar months (29 or 30 days) | 12 months of roughly fixed length |
| Common use | Religious occasions and the official calendar in some countries | International and general administrative use |
Because of the roughly 11-day difference in year length, the Hijri date corresponding to any fixed Gregorian date shifts backward by about that many days each year.
The 12 Hijri months in order
The Hijri year has 12 lunar months. Each month starts with the sighting of the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days.

Islamic New Year dates: Hijri years 1440 to 1450
The Gregorian date on which 1 Muharram fell each year. Future dates are estimates and may move by a day depending on moon sighting.
| Hijri year | 1 Muharram (Gregorian) |
|---|---|
| 1450 AH | 25 May 2028 (estimated) |
| 1449 AH | 6 June 2027 (estimated) |
| 1448 AH | 16 June 2026 |
| 1447 AH | 26 June 2025 |
| 1446 AH | 7 July 2024 |
| 1445 AH | 19 July 2023 |
| 1444 AH | 30 July 2022 |
| 1443 AH | 9 August 2021 |
| 1442 AH | 20 August 2020 |
| 1441 AH | 31 August 2019 |
| 1440 AH | 11 September 2018 |
Each Hijri year starts about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar than the year before, so most Gregorian years overlap two Hijri years.
How to convert a Hijri year to Gregorian by hand
- Hijri to Gregorian: Gregorian year ≈ (Hijri year × 0.97) + 622
- Gregorian to Hijri: Hijri year ≈ (Gregorian year − 622) × 1.03
Example: 1447 × 0.97 = 1403.6, plus 622 = 2025.6, so 1447 AH falls in 2025–2026. The formula gives the year only; use the converter above for the exact day and month.
Frequently asked questions
Does the result match the official Umm al-Qura calendar exactly?
Approximately, but not always exactly. This calculation is purely arithmetic, while the official Umm al-Qura calendar sometimes accounts for additional astronomical data, so a one- or two-day difference can appear, especially near the start of a month.
Can I convert very old or far-future dates?
Yes, arithmetically, but accuracy decreases the further the date is from the present, due to accumulated differences from the real astronomical calendar.
Are the dates I enter stored anywhere?
No. Only the date itself is sent to the conversion service, with nothing that identifies you, and nothing is stored.
Why do Hijri months have either 29 or 30 days?
A lunar month is actually about 29.5 days long, so months alternate between 29 and 30 days to approximate that average across the Hijri year.
What is today's date in Hijri?
Pick today in the Gregorian date field under the Gregorian to Hijri tab and the Hijri date appears instantly, with the month name.
How many years apart are the Hijri and Gregorian calendars?
About 578 to 579 years at the moment. The gap shrinks slowly because each Hijri year is about 11 days shorter.
What are the sacred months in the Islamic calendar?
Four months: Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah.
